Message to candidates and agents from Mary Harpley, GLRO about Mayoral and Assembly London-wide declarations at City Hall

Dear candidates and agents,

I promised to update you on Friday evening about our expected declaration time for the Mayoral and London-wide Assembly election results at City Hall in light of the first day’s counts.

You will have seen that six of the seven Assembly Constituency results have now been declared and we are expecting the last one shortly. It has been a long day and count progress has been slow – just as we had expected.

However, despite this we are still intending to declare the final Mayoral and London-wide results tomorrow, Saturday. Tomorrow’s seven counts are starting an hour earlier and there are some lessons from today that I am hoping will help us conclude the counts a little quicker.

All being well, the Mayoral declaration would be at 8.30pm, followed by the London-wide Assembly Member declaration at 9.30pm. Candidates, agents and guests for the Mayoral declaration will not be able to enter before 8pm, and London-wide candidates and agents will not be able to enter before 9.15pm. Those candidates and agents involved in both contests can remain in City Hall.

But we still cannot be certain about finishing in time tomorrow. I will email again at 4pm tomorrow with a further update and a final go/no go decision for tomorrow night. If, in the end, we cannot declare the Mayoral and London-wide Assembly results at a reasonable time tomorrow evening, we will go ahead instead on Sunday morning at 10am.

I apologise for the continuing uncertainty, but we are all doing the best we can.

Mary Harpley
Greater London Returning Officer
