The countdown begins… 100 days to go to election for Mayor of London and London Assembly

24th January 2012

  • London Elects website is launched today (24th January), fully integrated with social media tools to reach a wider community – particularly younger voters
  • With 100 days to go the election awareness and education campaign will also be on the ground visiting every borough
  • 5.8 million Londoners are registered and eligible to vote on 3rd May

With 100 days to go until the largest single election in the UK, London Elects has begun a three month campaign to raise awareness of the election and inform Londoners about when and how they can vote.

The election for the Mayor of London and the London Assembly takes place on 3rd May and around 5.8 million people are registered and eligible to vote in the election – people who live in London, are a British, Commonwealth or EU citizen and will be at least 18 years old on 3rd May.

Today (24th January) a brand new London Elects website www.londonelects.org.uk has been launched. As digital technology has moved on since the last Greater London Authority election four years ago, the website has been redesigned and is integrated with social media tools, including Twitter, Flickr, YouTube and Facebook, to reach a wider community – particularly younger voters.

The new website is clearly laid out with dedicated pages for voters, candidates and community groups as well as information on the many areas of London life that are affected by the work of the Mayor of London and the London Assembly, such as policing, transport, housing, planning and the environment. Londoners can also sign up to receive alerts to notify them of key announcements, dates and reminders about when to vote. Information is available in 17 different languages.

As the election day approaches more features will be added including a polling station finder and a full list of all the candidates standing.

The London Elects campaign will also be on the ground visiting every London borough to make sure people across London know how to have their say at the ballot box. This will be supported by a comprehensive London-wide advertising campaign and an information booklet delivered to all 5.8 million registered voters.

Sarah Garrett, Communications Manager at London Elects, said:London has a diverse population so creating a clear and accessible website is an integral part of London Elects’ awareness campaign. Online digital media has moved on a great deal in the last four years so it is vital for us to use many of the tools available to reach a wider audience and make more people aware of the election taking place. Londonelects.org.uk has lots of great features so Londoners will be able to find out all they need to know about why, where and how to vote on 3rd May.”

London Elects is the official, politically neutral source of information for the public, political parties, candidates, the media and electoral administrators.
