The London Assembly is made up of 14 Constituency Members and 11 London-wide Members. Nominations open on 18 March 2008. The nomination process for each is different.


Who to contact

If you want to stand as a London-wide candidate, London Elects will handle your nomination. If you want to stand in a constituency, you need to contact the relevent Constituency Returning Officer.

 

Nomination criteria

To stand as a candidate in the London Assembly elections you must meet certain criteria. You must be 18 years old or over when nominations open on 18 March 2008, and a citizen of the UK, European Union or Commonwealth.

 

You must also be registered to vote in London or have lived, worked, rented or owned property in London for the last 12 months.

 

Candidates' expenditure

Candidates are limited to how much they can spend on their election campaigns. The limit for Constituency Assembly candidates is £35,000. The limit for London-wide Assembly candidates is £330,000 (for an individual independent candidate or political party list).

  • Advertising
  • Unsolicited material distributed to voters
  • Party manifestos
  • Market research
  • Press conferences and media
  • Transport during the campaign
  • Rallies and other events

 

Expenses are counted from the 18 March 2008. Constituency Assembly candidates must submit their expenses to the Constituency Returning Officer (CRO) no later than 35 days after the election result has been declared. London-wide Assembly candidates must submit their expenses to the Greater London Returning Officer (GLRO) no later than 70 days after the election result has been declared.
